Former Police Officer, Prosecutor Announces Run for Attorney General
Citing his longtime commitment to public service, Chris Mann announced his campaign for Kansas Attorney General today focusing on his commitment to public safety in Kansas. He dedicated his career to serving and protecting Kansas communities first as a police officer and then as a prosecutor. He is running for attorney general a second time to refocus the office on law enforcement following several damaging years under Kris Kobach.
“In times like these, Kansas families need a law enforcement officer defending our communities and our rights, not a politician focused on their own personal ambition,” said Mann. “I’ll refocus the office on the basics of law enforcement, defend the rule of law, protect our rights, protect our families and make Kansas a safer place to live. Instead of focusing on what’s best for Kansas families, Kris Kobach has focused on his own personal agenda, and what office he can run for next. Kansans deserve better from their Attorney General.”
Wichita business woman Jill Docking will join the campaign as treasurer.
“Chris Mann’s record of public service demonstrates that as Attorney General, Kansans can count on him to stay focused on protecting them. Never before has it been so clear that we need leaders who will honor the rule of law. I believe Chris Mann is the right person for this job at this important moment,” said Docking.
Mann knew from an early age he wanted to serve his community. In college, he decided that meant a career in law enforcement, like his father. He became a police officer his junior year in college at just 21 years-old and then graduated from the University of Kansas soon after.
As an officer, Mann saw firsthand the tragedy of drunk driving while working accidents and arresting DUI offenders. His life was forever changed when he was struck by a drunk driver during a routine traffic stop in 2002. As a result of his extensive injuries, his career in uniform ended at the age of just 25.
“Because of that crash, I was forced to start over,” said Mann. “With the help of my faith and family, I found a new way to serve the public and protect our communities in the courtroom instead.”
Mann went on to become a prosecutor in the Wyandotte County District Attorney’s Office. He prosecuted a broad range of cases from DUI to murder. During this time, Mann also began volunteering with Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) and served as the Kansas Advisory Board Chair in 2011. He was then appointed to the MADD National Board of Directors in 2014 and served as the Board Chair until 2020.
On the state level, Mann played a key role in the passage of significant drunk driving legislation which included requiring ignition interlocks for all DUI offenders. As Chair of the MADD National Board of Directors, he gave presentations to law enforcement, industry professionals, the National Football League and crime victims across the United States. He continues working in organizations supporting victims and first responders struggling with PTSD.
“Working in Kansas and across the country to change DUI laws and penalties is a critical way I can help victims and stop offenders from hurting more families,” said Mann. “My ongoing support for first responders, survivors, and their families is also an essential part of my service to Kansas.”
Mann continued his career as an attorney for the Kansas Securities Commission, where he helped protect consumers and seniors by holding white collar criminals accountable. In 2016, he opened Mann Law Firm, P.A., and began providing legal representation for clients who could not afford an attorney of their own, as well as people impacted by drunk driving and other violent crime.
With experience in a wide range of legal areas, as well as a deep understanding of law enforcement, Mann brings a unique perspective to serving his clients. He will bring that same approach to the Kansas Attorney General’s Office.
Mann is married to Ashley Mann, a Cardiothoracic Surgeon who practices in Olathe. They live in Lawrence with their two kids, Skylar (10) and William (6).
